Savannah, GA has been the subject of many wonderful literary treatments, including Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and The Damned Don't Cry by Harry Hervey.
Having just spend a wonderfully decadent weekend there, I wonder how much my experience of the city was influenced by the books and films I've seen. Though I'd been there before, it was when THE BOOK (as they call Midnight) ruled, before Paula Deen's family seized control of Savannah's pop culture empire. So how much of the beauty, food, and boozing would I have missed without these pop culture touchstones? How much of my Savannah experience is my perception Savannah, and how much is it the book, the movie version of the book, and hours of watching Miss Paula Deen's butter?
More importantly, how can I use my experience--ALL my perceptions of Savannah--to inform my own writing? That's the question percolating in my brain right now.
I think it's a safe bet, though, that I'll have a character from or a scene set among the drooping Spanish moss Savannah coming soon!
